MTIPS Theme
Sometimes
it's just fun to review. Sometimes it's just fun, and
usually more valuable than we could ever imagine, to
just play old songs. To relax, kick back and simply
celebrate our student's (and as I discovered, my own!)
successes.

MTIPS Development
The
weather here on Long Island, New York has been a
beautiful tug of war between an approaching autumn and a
slipping-away summer; the perfect weather for a pot of
tea or a glass of wine on my porch! Absolutely
delightful weather for reflection. As I reflected on my
day teaching, it occurred to me that I had actually used
this technique of reflection to break the occasional
monotony of the weekly task fulfillment of a piano
lesson.
Sometimes
it's just fun to review. Sometimes it's just fun, and
usually more valuable than we could ever imagine, to
just play old songs. To relax, kick back and simply
celebrate our student's (and as I discovered, my own!)
successes.
I
recently did this with one of my students. We were
approaching our first anniversary as a student- teacher
team. We decided to play some of the songs we had
learned throughout our past year together. As we looked
back in our assignment book for the titles of these
songs, I was suddenly struck by how far we had
progressed! And as a side note, while I do not have
"favorites" amongst my students, this would
not have been one of the students with whom I would
instantly free associate the word "progress."
Yet,
the assignment book cannot lie; we had certainly
progressed! We had learned much more than to which I
would have initially admitted! The student was excited
to simply review; I was ecstatic at how excited he was
and to how much material we had to review!
I
shared with him my excitement and assisted him in
creating a list of songs, skills, elements and
principles we had learned. We easily filled an entire 8
½" x 11"page!
Maybe
it was my imagination, but I would bet you a pirates
treasure that after this "taking stock"
activity, his shoulders were a bit taller, his eyes a
bit brighter and his smile a bit wider! I sure know mine
were!

you give people the space and the support to learn and
to change, they will." -Eric Hippeau
"When
you have done your musical day's work and feel tired, do
