3. VIP Q & A

Q: As a professional singer, do you follow any particular type of diet?

A: I adore eating (perhaps it's my Italian heritage!). I honestly eat whatever I want to eat - especially on the weekends. During the week, I decrease my carbohydrate intake and indulge mostly in proteins after 5pm. I drink large quantities of water (besides my morning orange juice, water is the only cold beverage I drink). I do my best to get adequate sleep and I also work out 4 to 5 times a week (cardio/weight training). With regards to the well being of my voice, all of the above helps,
Making smart choices before a performance would also be helpful. I avoid eating any heavy or spicy meals the day of a performance and sometimes even the night before. I also choose to eat a moderate meal, free of any dairy, excess sugar, or gaseous ingredients at least 2 hours before a performance.
I also avoid anything that will change the color of my tongue! (After one performance, a friend of mine told me she could see my red tongue every time I opened up my mouth!) I generally opt for simple, almost bland meals before a performance. So while I do not follow any specific diet, I am conscious of how certain foods and beverages affect my voice and body. This is what works for me and I give the above advice to any other vocalists. In my interactions with other singers, I have found that one of the greatest culprits of excess mucous in the throat is soda. Steer clear of any beverage containing any of the many corn syrups. Make smart, healthy choices and watch your performance soar.

4. Vocal Tip

Due to the cold season (especially for us Northerners!), the voice can take a beating. Here are a couple of reminders on how to care for the voice during this season:

-Dress appropriately (yes, scarves do help but also remember that over dressing can be just as bad as under dressing!)

-Keep throat and nostrils moist.

-Drink 8 to 10 glasses of water a day (this is sometimes more difficult to do in the winter, because you do not sweat as much, but this intake is very important to maintain.)

-Get plenty of rest.

-Don't sing or speak if your body temperature is cold. The cold constricts the vocal cords. Warm up your body and drink warm fluids first.

-On the onset of a cold, pump up the vitamin C.

-As always…keep a positive state of mind!

Here's to a vocally healthy 2003!

5. Notable Quotables

"Inside the piano there are a thousand irregularities: 'tis the nature of the beast. Despite it all, we continue to think we are hearing something beautiful, and so we are. Our ears, our hearts, forgive. Music could even be defined by what we happen to be forgiving at a particular time in history."
-Anita T. Sullivan

"An important personal quality for a teacher is that he care about humanity."
-Edward C. Helwick
