Test Your Vocal Knowledge

comfortable range of a singer.

3. Q & A
- Q: I am an amateur singer who just started taking
voice lessons. A family member asked me if I would
sing a song at her party in April. I am a bit
nervous but would like to "go for it!" Any
suggestions on how to choose a song?
- A: Choose a song with which you feel comfortable.
Because this is a new experience for you, you don't
want to worry about not remembering the lyrics or
not being able to reach that ridiculously high note
at the end of the piece! KNOW the song well so that
you may concentrate on the delivery. Let the song be
one that speaks to you and is appropriate to the
event you are attending and its audience. Continue
to share your voice in this way, as you will become
increasingly confident and start challenging
yourself more. This is how you grow as a singer and
performer. It is such an amazing reward to
experience the joy you bring into the lives of
others - you will want to share your voice again and
again!

Vocal Tip
Whether
it's a speech in front of your child's classmates,
singing a solo in a local choir or performing at the
Grammys...leave all of your excuses at the door. Don't
share with your audience that you are sick or you hardly
slept the night before. This type of behavior is
disappointing to your audience, depicts you as weak and
is simply unprofessional. Always set out to do your
best, NO MATTER WHAT YOUR CIRCUMSTANCE MAY BE! Perform
with a smile, confidence and energy. This positive
attitude will give you the kind of inner strength that
distinguishes the truly great performers from the
mediocre.

your hopes, not your fears." -David Mahoney

was my refuge. I could crawl into the spaces between the
notes and curl my back to loneliness." -Maya
