Q & A
Q:
Can you offer any advice to help relieve anxiety prior
to a performance?
A:
First, be prepared. Being unprepared can make you very
anxious. Also, to calm your heart rate and make you more
relaxed, practice slow and deep inhalations and long
exhalations. Some performers I know do jumping jacks or
run in place to shake off any nervous energy. Sometimes,
I'll listen to something funny on a cassette to keep
myself relaxed and light. I strongly believe that taking
a moment prior to your performance to ground yourself
and focus on all the wonderful things you have to offer,
is perhaps the greatest way of suppressing anxiety.
Believe in yourself, be heartfelt and always do your
absolute best. Oh yeah, there's always picturing your
audience in their underwear!

Vocal Tip
If
you are experiencing body tension while speaking or
singing, watch yourself in the mirror. Many students I
have worked with were completely unaware of all the
tension in their body (ex. head tilts, jaw tightening,
elevated shoulders, frowning, etc.) This simple task
will help you diagnose the location of your tension so
you can work on relaxing it. Of course, as a result, you
will perform better!
