2. Vocal Trivia
Test Your Vocal Knowledge
1. What is the thick rectangular muscle in your cheek
that helps close your jaw? - your mandible or masseter?
2. The medical term for throat is ____________.
3. True or False: Throat sprays don't solve your throat
problems, they only numb your throat temporarily so you
can't feel the discomfort.

3. VIP Q & A
Q: What do you think is the best thing I can do to have
a successful audition?
A: PREPARE! When you have an opportunity to show off
your talents, don't just wing it! Being prepared shows
how serious you are about your craft. It tells the
director/producer/etc. that you handle yourself in a
professional manner. Know ahead of time what is required
and expected from you. Dress appropriately, get adequate
sleep the night before, arrive early and stay positive
and enthusiastic. However…that will all go out the
window if you forget the words or you have clearly NOT
rehearsed your audition piece enough! I know sometimes
that auditions come up with little notice. So, prepare
your repertoire NOW so that you will be prepared when
that time arises later. Instead of scrambling for a
piece the night before, wouldn't it be nice to have the
confidence to say, "Great, I'll perform the piece I
have been preparing for months." Now you will go
into the audition with clarity, enthusiasm and
confidence! You are setting yourself up for a top-notch
performance. Even if you get rejected ('tis the nature
of the business!), you should leave feeling proud that
you did the best you could do. AND that feeling of pride
must override any feeling of disappointment so that you
will go out and audition again and again. After all,
it's your dream and only you can make it happen!

4. Vocal Tip
Go see Bobby McFerrin perform live! I saw him in a solo
performance on Friday night and I can say without a
doubt that it was one of the most creative, exciting,
enjoyable concerts I have ever seen. He is a true master
of the voice - an amazing musician and spiritual being.
I can't even begin to describe what was so extraordinary
about this concert and this man - you just have to
experience him live. Please go when he is in your
neighborhood. You will be so inspired by his greatness!

5. Notable Quotables
"My voice is my instrument…It is not in the
throat from where it appears to come. It is in my feet
and how they touch the floor, in my legs and how they
lift and sink with the rhythm of the song. It is in my
hips and belly and lower back."
-Holly Near, with
Derk Richardson
"No one has yet fully realized the wealth of
sympathy, kindness and generosity hidden in the soul of
a child. The effort of every true education should be to
unlock that treasure."
-Emma Goldman
