2. Vocal Trivia

Test Your Vocal Knowledge

1. Is it better to spit out excess phlegm or swallow it?

2. The songwriting term that is the part of a song that grabs the listener's attention and stay in the memory is called the ___________.

3. True or False: Whitney Houston's real childhood desire was to become a horse trainer.

3. VIP Q & A

Q: What's the best way to clear my throat?

A: Try to avoid what is probably the most logical thing to do, COUGHING! Coughing irritates the back of the throat, putting extra stress on your vocal cords. If you have that urge to cough, try first to loosen up the cough by using an expectorant (non-numbing cough syrup) or by inhaling warm steam. This will help make the phlegm loose so it will come up without much effort or stress in the back of your throat. Of course, spit out any excess phlegm that does come up. Keeping well hydrated will also keep the phlegm loose. If you just have to cough, however, cough using a "huh" sound like you are blowing out a candle with your mouth open (be careful not to let any phlegm escape - you might want to have a tissue handy!) This way, your diaphragm is doing all the work, not your throat.

4. Vocal Tip

Compose a song! Even if you are not a songwriter, this activity is a wonderful creative outlet utilizing something you love to do - SINGING! Start humming and create an original melody. Don't worry if it sounds a little familiar. Record yourself so you don't forget the melody. Add lyrics-perhaps words describing a story you love or an experience you've had. Don't feel like you have to make Billboard's Top Ten list! Just be creative and be proud of a song that is all your own. You can take this activity a step further by having it notated, either by yourself if you are capable, by a musician, or even by a computer program. Maybe, if you really believe in your song, you can copyright it, publish it and/or record it! Or - you may simply just want to sing it acapella to your child. Whatever the level, just be creative and make it a fun project!

5. Notable Quotables

"Once you begin to phrase finely, you will feel more joy in the beautiful finish of a beautiful phrase than that caused by the loudest applause of an immense audience. The latter excites for a moment; the former endures forever."

-Nellie Melba

"The game of life is the game of boomerangs. Our thoughts, deeds and words return to us sooner or later, with astounding accuracy."

-Florence Shinn
