3. VIP Q & A
Q: I seem to be getting sick a lot this summer.
What's up with that and what can I do to keep my
voice healthy for the rest of the summer?
A: You are not alone. I am amazed as to the number
of health complaints I am hearing about this summer
(students and non-students AND self included!) We
have had some funky weather here in the Northeast.
Is the rest of the world having the same problem?
Though it doesn't help your illness, your dilemma
is actually common. In the summer, you body is
constantly adjusting to and from the hot, humid
outdoors, to the cool, dry, air-conditioned
indoors. Also, allergy symptoms have been quite
high this summer, even if you usually don't get
allergies. These challenges weaken your immune
system and can cause the body to break down and get
sick! Make sure you maintain a healthy diet and
exercise program. Sleep enough. If you work all
day in an office building, go outside during a
break for some air (yes, you will endure the
temperature and air quality change but you need a
break from all the germs floating around in your
air-conditioned building too!) Also, remember that
unless you are experiencing irritation in your
throat, keep singing and speaking-there is no need
to put a halt to your continued vocal growth! Just
keep it light. As always, keep well hydrated and
STAY POSITIVE!

4. Vocal Tip
Have you ever had a facial or body massage? Hire a
professional or convince a friend or family member
to treat you to one. Your body is your instrument;
so take care of it well. A massage will relax your
muscles and get rid of tension in your face and
body. It will also put you in a pleasant mental
state and relax your breathing pattern. As a
result, your performance will of course improve.
Should you experience tension before a performance,
you can also recall how you felt after a massage
and visualize being in that relaxed state. Of
course you could just get a massage simply because
IT FEELS SO GOOD!
