2. Test Your Vocal Knowledge

  1. If you need to perform while sitting, is it better to lean slightly back or slightly forward?
  2. ____________ is a term referring to the degree of loudness and softness.
  3. True or False: Singing or speaking for too long can ruin your voice. ___________________________________________________

3. Q & A

Q: I love to sing and I really want to get better. How often should I be practicing?

A: This is a difficult question to answer without knowing your vocal goals. However, I can confidently say that consistency is key. Whether you want to learn how to kick a soccer ball or sing like a pro, it is better to be sharpening your skills every day. For example, singing 20 minutes every day is more effective than singing 2 hours, 3 times a week. You are conditioning your voice and, for maximum results, this requires daily training. Make sure you have a plan (consult with an expert if you are not sure where to start) so that when your practice session starts you are not floundering. Focus and make the most of this time developing the voice of which you've always dreamed!

4. Vocal Tip

Vibrato, the stylistic "shaking" of the singing tone, is not created in the jaw or throat. It is the variation of the breath as controlled by the diaphragm. I frequently give my students "the puppy" exercise which gets them more connected with the action of their diaphragm. Simply sniff quickly in and out like a puppy. Notice the movement of your diaphragm and stomach muscles. Panting has the same effect but dries out your throat. Connecting this physical action with pitch will help you understand how vibrato is created.

5. Notable Quotables

"Music is a missionary effort to colonize earth for imperialistic heaven." -Rebecca West

"Too often we give children answers to remember rather than problems to solve." -Roger Lewin
