goals. Take care of your voice, if it breaks you can't
get a new one!
A
personal note to subscribers: I will be running a solo
(had to get a musical term in there!) marathon on
Sunday, October 15th. It has always been a dream of mine
and I was not about to let the fact that I was not
accepted in the New York City Marathon affect my desire
to run. I will be running 27 miles round trip from my
home through 7 beautiful towns on the north shore of
Long Island. I have had tremendous support as I am also
raising money for the Make-A-Wish Foundation. Anyone
interested in making a donation to this wonderful
organization may send checks made payable to Make-A-Wish
Foundation to: Make-A-Wish Foundation of Suffolk County,
NY, Inc. 100-1 Patco Court Islandia, NY 11749 In order
to keep track of the donations sent on behalf of this
event, please write "Diane's Marathon" in the
memo of your check. Thank you in advance for making a
difference and helping fulfill a sick child's wish!

VIP Q & A
Q:
I love to sing but I am so afraid to sing in front of
anyone. Any suggestions to overcome this fear?
A:
First you need to have the desire to share your talent.
While some people are content to just sing to
themselves, it doesn't seem that this is true for you.
Once you decide to tackle this fear, it is then time to
get a little bit outside of your comfort zone. The key
phrase here is "a little bit." Not going
enough outside your comfort zone will not challenge you.
Going too far outside your comfort zone will frustrate
you. Either way is counterproductive. In your situation,
going a bit outside your comfort zone might mean
inviting a friend over to hear you sing, or singing a
song to your mom or dad. You can even share a recording
of yourself singing to someone - whatever it takes to
make that first step.
Taking
the plunge and deciding to go for it can be really scary
at first. You must hush that little voice inside of you
telling you not to do it! Just always remember your
commitment and follow through. This is how you grow as a
performer and person. Nursing homes are a great outlet
to perform. You are always welcome and the residents are
always thrilled to be visited by young people. Whatever
you sing ...they will love! What a win/win situation -
you get to conquer your fear, while building confidence
as a performer AND you get to simultaneously brighten
someone else's life - all with a song!
There
are so many opportunities to perform and share your
talent. The more opportunities of which you take
advantage, the more comfortable a performer you will
become. Remember to surround yourself with positive
people who believe in you and will support you in your
commitment. Visit your local book store and read about
successful performers and how they overcame their stage
fright. One particular book, "The Inner Game of
Music," has a chapter devoted to this topic. So,
the information and the support is out there for the
taking. Just add your commitment and success is
inevitable. Good Luck!

Vocal Tip
This
time of year, I notice students complaining of allergies
and colds. Beyond the typical treatments for these
ailments, I suggest you do the following: BE POSITIVE!!!
Your state of mind directly effects your physical being.
If you think you are going to suffer from allergies,
guess what - you will! Daily declare yourself a healthy
person and you will experience less ailments. By being
positive, you can actually cure your cold before it gets
the best of you. Besides being good to your body and
mind and taking fantastic care of yourself, don't let
the possibility of even getting sick into your thought
process. Here's some motivation: Less sickness means
more singing!
