VIP Q & A
Q:
I do a lot of community theatrical productions. It seems
like I am always getting the same advice from directors
- "Open your mouth!" What is so important
about opening up my mouth?
A:
Well, since this has occured more than once, it is a
smart idea to investigate. Different directors have
different needs. One may need you to be louder. One may
need you to be more articulate. Opening your mouth is
important in that is helps you do something even more
valuable- opening up the back of your throat. By doing
this, you are allowing more space for your breath (which
facilitates volume control and should be doing most of
the work in terms of vocal production). Opening your
mouth will also facilitate a more open and powerful tone
and gives you more presence as an actor. Though the lips
and tongue play an important role in articulation,
opening your mouth can also assist you in getting your
point across, especially on words with open vowels. It
is great to listen to your feedback and be open to new
techniques. This is a great way to grow as a performer.

Vocal Tip
Stay
on top of your healthy voice game! This particular
seasonal transition is popular in developing cold
symptoms. The sudden warm to cold weather shift can
throw off your immune system. As soon as you get even a
hint of a symptom, take action. Sleep more, drink more
fluids, up your vitamin C intake and gargle with warm
water and salt. Get your body (and mind!) in the power
position and you CAN eliminate the cold before it gets
the best of you!
