3. VIP Q & A

Q: I am always singing! Is it possible to practice too much?

A: Well, you must be pretty motivated to practice to be asking such a question! When you use your voice properly, long practice sessions will not hurt your voice. It is a good idea, however, to give your voice a break every now and then. Skip a day or two. You won't lose ground on your progress in that short amount of time and it could give new life to your voice. (Almost like your voice saying, "Ah, thanks for the rest!") If you are serious about your voice, you should practice and sing every day, as long as you are feeling healthy and rested. For example, on days when I did not sleep much the night before, I refrain from singing and speak lightly the entire day. It's great to be highly motivated to practice but it is also wise to realize that you can vocally benefit from a rest day or two. Keep practicing and listen to your voice, for it will tell you when it needs a break!

4. Vocal Tip

Keep allergies and early season colds in check. This is a very common time for these ailments. If your throat gets irritated, gargle with warm water and salt twice a day. Rest your voice and your body, get extra sleep, drink extra water and pump up the vitamin C. By taking these steps at the onset of a cold, you can actually prevent it from becoming a full blown cold.

5. Notable Quotables

"Speeches and fruit should always be fresh."

-Nikki Giovanni

"When I first opened my mouth, I had a big impressive sound...but I had no high voice at all. That means I simply didn't know how. I've seen some singers with extraordinary voices who never find the way to sing high notes and end up with secondary parts because of this defect."

-Joan Sutherland
