3. BELIEVE IT - ACHIEVE IT!

As I mentioned last month, I ran my first marathon on October 15th. The reason I am sharing this with you is because this experience was one of the most exhilarating, empowering moments of my life! In March of this year, I decided to apply to run in the New York City marathon. Running a marathon has always been a dream of mine. Unfortunately, after two lotteries, I was not accepted. This disappointing circumstance did not deter me from my commitment. I continued my training and created my own course round trip from my home through seven towns on Long Island's beautiful north shore. I called the Make-A-Wish Foundation and told them I wanted to raise money for a sick child. I hired a professionaI videographer (he donated his time!) to capture the event. I enlisted family and friends to help out with my post race brunch, make a donation or just be there! (Some even joined me for a few miles!). The thrill of crossing the finish line (held by my 2 daughters) and into the arms of my husband while the rest of my family and friends cheered on was incredible. I sat back that night, feeling blessed and proud of what I had created.

The message here is this. By believing in yourself and being committed to your dream, anything and everything is possible. Do what makes your heart happy and watch the magic. The vehicle in which I brought my particular dream to fruition, was a marathon. To relate this experience to the voice, I'd like to share the following true story with you. I recall an adult vocal student who decided to participate in one of our recitals for the first time. Since childhood, she always wanted to sing. She took the first big step (and it was a BIG step for her!) by calling me. We had a blast together. She was always so excited and eager to learn. How wonderful it was, as her teacher, to have the opportunity to work with such an enthusiastic, self-motivated student!

She found great joy in her lessons and built up quite a bit of confidence as well. Within a year, she found the courage to perform at our annual recital. She said that though she was nervous, the feeling she had at the end of her performance as her children and husband proudly stood up and the large audience cheered, was unbelievably fulfilling. She was overwhelmingly emotional and full of pride. After the show, she told me that next to getting married and having her children, her experience at the recital was the most powerful moments of her life. Wow! Life is too short not to take action on all you have always wanted to accomplish. Live you dreams NOW - You will inspire others to do the same and will lead an extraordinary life you never thought imaginable!

4. Vocal Tip

Noticethe changes in your throat, nose and skin since the drier weather has arrived? Even if you live in the south, there will be humidity changes that will affect these areas. The cold, dry air can be a real enemy at times, especially if you live in the north. Just as you apply extra moisturizer to you skin during this season, remember to tend to other important parts of your body.(As a speaker and/or singer, your body IS your instrument!) You may not get very sweaty, but you still need to hydrate. Drink BEFORE you get thirsty. Sleeping with a humidifier throwing moisture into the air is also beneficial. To avoid waking up with dried out nasal passages, try applying a thin coat of petroleum jelly in your nostrils before going to bed. Also - don't forget your lips. I recall a performance where my lips cracked and started to bleed after I opened my mouth and made my entrance, which just happened to start on a high, loud note! Ouch!

5. Notable Quotables

6. Trivia Answers

2. smoker
3. false - It is not necessary but it sure can help to prepare the voice and gain greater flexibility for a performance.
