2. Vocal Trivia

Test Your Vocal Knowledge

1. Do classical singers tend to sing with a more darker or brighter tone?

2. A word containing two consecutive vowel sounds in the same syllable is called a ____________.

3. True or False: Your vocal cords are naturally very thick.

3. VIP Q & A

Q: What do I need to do to make my voice sound brighter? Every time I sing a pop song I sound too classical.

A: Perhaps you are classical trained and was never taught how to alter your tone to make it sound appropriate for the pop genre. Of course, never forget all your wonderful classical training (which actually helps you achieve success with your pop voice -that's subject for another issue!) One immediate change you can make is warming up with bright vowels. Try "ee" and "ay" over "oh" and "ah". This will get your mouth into a brighter or more horizontal position, as when you naturally smile. Watch yourself in the mirror as you do this. Also try using less vibrato.
Another change would be to place the tone slightly in you nose. Also try lowering your soft palate slightly. Of course, the back of your throat should always open when you sing in any genre. However, when singing pop your throat will be a bit less open than when you sing classical. Listening to your favorite pop artist and trying to imitate him/her will also be beneficial. Finally, record yourself to monitor the changes.
