3. VIP Q & A

Q: How can I create vibrato?

A: Vibrato, that stylish shaking of your voice when you are singing, is best developed through breathing exercises. Some people have a natural vibrato and others have what is called a straight tone. Both can find value in strengthening their vibrato through breathing exercises. Try sniffing in and out rapidly through your nose (I call this the doggy exercise!). Inhale and exhale rapidly and continuously for approximately 10 seconds at a time. Note: panting instead of sniffing will give you the same results but it really dries out your throat! The act of sniffing or panting gets you connected with the role of your diaphragm. The motion of the diaphragm controls the amount of breath being released which when properly executed can result in vibrato! This explanation sounds a bit confusing but once you mentally and physically get connected with how your diaphragm operates, then you can apply this to pitch and practice singing with vibrato. Remember, vibrato is not created by forcing the vocal cords but rather by a natural movement of the diaphragm resulting in a controlled oscillation of sound. It's exciting to have this tool to create interest in your songs. ============================================

4. Vocal Tip

When you are tired, be especially conscious of diaphragmatic breathing as your body fatigue and lack of energy can lead you to weakness in your abdominal muscles and poor breath support putting undue stress on your vocal cords. =============================================

5. Notable Quotables

"It was very hard...to teach me breathing technique. (My teacher) used to keep her hands on my diaphragm...the area under my rib cage...and made me push against it to show me what kind of support she wanted. When I was twelve or thirteen I didn't understand that I was using a breathing technique. Later I realized that her entire basis of technique was breath control." -Beverly Sills

"It's this simple; if I never try anything, I never learn anything. If I never take a risk, I stay where I am." -Hugh Prather
