Music education is the art of facilitating a person through the creation and understanding of music with a specific instrument.  For me, the primary element is the person, the secondary is the language of music and the final element is the specific instrument.  Thus, some of the books on the following list will be “non-musical” in nature, yet very people oriented and thus, imperative reading for understanding your students.  They have been influential in shaping my career as an educator, I hope they provide you with the same value.

A Soprano on Her Head 1. A Soprano on Her Head by Eloise Ristad
Great book for alternative ways of approaching common challenges.  Excellent for insight into understanding the learner as opposed to simply providing information to him.

The Inner Game of Music 2. The Inner Game of Music by Barry Green
This book focuses more on the conversations that go on in our brains while we are learning/performing a piece of music.  We all know of the "little voice" (for some of us, it's actually HUGE!) that talks to us while we perform.  The Inner Game of Music shares specific activities to allow us to remain in "the zone" while we play.

The Art of Practicing 3. The Art of Practicing - A guide to making music from the heart.  by Madeline Bruser
Madeline has excellent insight into effective and ineffective practicing process.  A wonderful book that is very "soft" in its approach to learning.

Unlimited Power 4. Unlimited Power by Tony Robbins
Tony Robbins is known for his infomercials and motivational speaking.  He also utilizes a "science" called Neuro Associative Conditioning (NAC).  I believe he says it best.   He feels we are all born with the most powerful computer in the universe, our brains.  Unfortunately, it did not come with an owners manual.  This book is the owners manual.

How to Talk so Kids will Learn 5. How to Talk So Kids Will Learn
by Adele Faber and Elaine Mazlish
Communicating in an effective and nurturing way is most beneficial to our students.  This book is geared to providing the reader with the communication skills that will enable him to communicate effectively,  and in a way that nurtures the child's self esteem (isn't that an oxymoron?!)

Teacher Effectiveness Training 6. Teacher Effectiveness Training
by Dr. Thomas Gordon
Predecessor to number 5, but along the same vein.  My first introduction to effective communication skills.

The Musical Life 7. The Musical Life -  Reflections on what it is and how to live it.  by W.A. Mathieu
A wonderful book that finds music every where, not just at a traditional instrument.  You really can sit in a meadow, or on your front steps and hear the symphony of the world!

Making Music for the Joy of It 8. Making Music for the Joy of It - Enhancing Creativity, Skills, and Musical Confidence  by Stephanie Judy
Written with the "average user" in mind, this book avoids technical jargon, and does exactly what it sets out to do; provide the reader with ideas for "making music for the joy of it"  Hey, isn't that why we do this in the first place?!

Guide to the Pianist's Repertorie 9. Guide to the Pianist's Repertoire by Maurice Hinson
Exactly what the title says!  More for the intermediate to advanced student.

10. Reflections from the Keyboard by David Dubal
Conversations with some of this centuries most prominent pianists.  Insightful to read, it truly makes the point clear that we are involved in an art, open to all the interpretations of the artist and not a science.

BONUS RECOMMENDATION:

Effortless Mastery by Kenny Werner
I added this in because I just finished reading it (9/99).  I love this book!  It's about the spiritual aspect of making  music.  For me, it doesn't get much better than spirituality and music, or as I like to call it., the magic behind the music.  It's about tapping that place in which we all perform without effort.  It's about being in the "zone"all of the time.
